Jonathan stepped into the sky.

About a month after Victoria told Mike she was pregnant, he drove Jonathan up a mountain so his son could leap off the edge.

For weeks, Mike had been driving the truck down after each jump. Watching his son fly out over the lake.

This time, he wanted to see him land. So he ran to the truck. Started driving. Looked for him in the sky.

Nothing. Trees. Sky. No chute.

Then he saw it. Twisted. Folding. His son falling from 200 feet up.

Jonathan was conscious when Mike reached him. Back. Legs. Knees. Ankles. Every toe. Broken body. Howling.

Mike said, “Don't beat yourself up.”

And Jonathan screamed the exact words Mike had screamed silently at his own father when he was ten.
